THE THRILLING ADVENTURE AND SUPERNATURAL SUSPENSE HOUR

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

ackerandblacker1.jpg

The Thrilling Adventure and Supernatural Suspense Hour is a staged production in the style of old time radio. Nicely dressed actors read genre-soaked narratives. A foley artisan creates sound effects that will astound one of your senses. A very small orchestra accompanies all shows. (TTASSH myspace page)

Acker and Blacker and the Work Juice crew return this Saturday for another night of hilarious staged readings, singing, and other special delights. I first saw The Thrilling Adventure and Supernatural Suspense Hour earlier this year and have been dying to go back since. I’ve always thought dinner theatre was completely lame until I saw this show and laughed my bum off all the way through dinner. One of my favorite numbers was Sparks Nevada:

Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars is a space-western following the adventures of the heroic lawman stationed in the Western Quadrant of space. With his fairthful Martian companion, Sparks fights off robot outlaws, alien scientists, and space-gangs to keep the peace on the red planet.

The cast is incredibly talented (and features a couple of my favorite L.A. performers Craig Cackowski and Joel Spence) and each vignette is hilariously written. Watching the show it’s really impossible to tell who’s having more fun, the actors or the audience. If you ask me, that’s the best sign of a really great show.

Feeling the need to gallop? Dude’s Ranch is a non-profit, 501(c)3 horse rescue, situated on a private ranch in Los Angeles County (Malibu and Acton, CA). If you’ve been debating on the horsepower of that Mustang convertible, lease a Dude’s Ranch horse instead (full or co-lease programs), which I’m sure will be more gratifying.

Offering private and couple riding lessons (Loubies or low-rider Levis not recommended), Dude’s Ranch also has the, “Non Crash, Crash Course for Actors”, for the thespian who lands their first spurring role and is in need of saddle lessons.

Call 818-497-7468 or 661-269-2473 to book a Sunset Ride or other majestic tours. All proceeds from the non-profit organization are for the upkeep, medical expenses, retraining and placement of their rescue horses.

Ahh, drive-ins; vivid memories of my parents taking advantage of my small build by concealing me on the floor of the back seat. Now that I think of it, maybe that’s why I’m not keen on sitting in the back seat of cars…

In lieu of your diminuitive children, take advantage of balmy nights and stellar movie openings at Pacific Vineland Drive-in. One of the dinosaurs left to enjoy summer cinematic enjoyment, this drive-in is open year-round, has expanded to 4 screens, with an overall capacity for over 1500 cars. Part of the drive-in experience was the raggedy intercom, threaded thorugh the cracked car window that never stopped the mosquitoes from feasting. Fortunately, Vineland’s audio is provided by FM stereo radio broadcast.

NEW BLOGGER

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Hello 451 readers,

My name’s Paris Lia.  I’m very happy to have been invited to share my thoughts on Los Angeles for 451 Press.

One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is its vibrant alternative comedy scene.  Many of TV’s funniest people can be found performing throughout the week most notably at IO West and Upright Citizen’s Brigade in Hollywood.

This summer has seen an amazing line up of comedians - Patton Oswalt, who most recently voiced the character of Remy in this summer’s animated hit, Ratatouille can be seen performing in Comedy Death Ray this Tuesday the 16th at Upright Citizen’s Brigade.  The show is a mix of stand up, characters, and sketch.

July is also Ladies Month at UCB Theatre.  This Friday I caught the hilarious show Mother F****r featuring some of comedy’s funniest ladies - Jamie Denbo, Dannah Feinglass, Danielle Schneider, and Katie Roberts.  The show that promises balls to the wall improv from ladies with no actual balls lived up to its word and provided just the right size eggs to throw in a face the size of… oh say…Christopher Hitchens’.

You can catch Mother F****r Saturday, July 28th at 8pm ($8) and Sunday, July 29th, 7:30pm (FREE).

No Longer Crying Over Spilled MILK

Friday, July 13th, 2007

303075_i_scream1.jpg
I once was an ice cream-aholic, going into cosmic brain freezes from a flavor which echoed my sentiment - Death By Chocolate. It was a weekly summer ritual, indulging in this textured scoop of nirvana perched atop a sugar cone. It was followed by the purchase of a clear cylinder containing Carvel’s chocolate & vanilla Flying Saucers (round ice cream sandwich cookies); the dairy version of a tea party for me and my grandmother. Her banana split was also ordered to go, for I knew she was waiting back home for the sugary soirée . Yeah, I had it bad…

About seven years ago, lactose intolerance entered my world, ending my enjoyment of all things relevant to dairy AND chocolate. I’m not crying any more, thanks to MILK. Located at 7290 Beverly Blvd. in West Hollywood, its homemade ice cream is reminiscent of the happy days when ice cream parlors were not associated with calories or shipped-in deliveries. Most importantly, they are showing love for the lactose-intolerant, with a selection of soy vanilla, chocolate and coffee toffee for our reactive bellies.

I know my grandmother is smiling down from heaven, knowing that we would still be able to sit and enjoy ice cream together at MILK; she enjoying her banana split, and I creating custom-built ice cream sandwiches from their soy milk ice cream.

A Salute to Cafeterias

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Last week I wrote about The Old Spaghetti Factory soon being closed down in LA.

cliftonsevent.jpgNow there’s an event being held by the Southern California Restaurant Historical Society in which they will celebrate restaurants both past and present. By commemorating restaurants still open, they also keep the memory alive of former places that no longer exist. At 10:00A.M. on May 26th, the event is going to be held at Clifton’s Brookdale Cafeteria. The cost is completely free to attend, with the motto of “Pay What you Wish, Dine Free Unless Delighted”.

Special guests to be present at the event are D.J. Waldie, Charlie Perry, Chris Nichols, and Robert Clifton, all of whom have a strong connection to culinary arts in the L.A. basin.

For more information on how to attend, and details of the event, visit LottaLiving.com and Clifton’s Cafeteria.

Plant a Tree in Lake View Terrace

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

plant_tree_030506.jpgToday in the suburb of Lake View Terrace, people from Girl Scout troops, wildlife lovers, and all walks of life are planting trees. Supported by volunteers from TreePeople, everyone was instructed and trained on what to do, and as a result, the trees were able to be planted in 20 minutes or less. The last day of the planting season was today, so everyone is making the most of it.

One girl scout troop reportedly planted 25 trees in the Lake View Terrace Recreational Center.

All planted trees were named as well.

Los_Angeles_Zoo.gifIt’s telling me that the Spider City at the Los Angeles Zoo opened a few days ago, and needs some arachnid lovers to come check it out. ^_~ That is, if you’re not arachnophobic, of course.

What better a time to open Spider City than when Spider-Man 3 is in theaters? Coincidence?

I think not.

But that’s not really the point here.

In Spider City, you’ll find at least 25 different species of spiders, including the Cobalt Blue Tarantula, Brown Recluse, Goliath Birdeater, and Chilean Rosehair. It’s a temporary exhibit, located in the old koala house. The exhibit will only be open for viewing until October 31st, so if you wanna check it out, be sure to mark your calendars so you won’t be too late.

The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is home to well over 200 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. Amongst the many animal exhibits throughout the park, the zoo features a number of shows featuring trained animals, such as the Worlds Bird Show. The zoo is located at the northeast corner of Griffith Park, at the Junction of the I-5 and I-134 freeways. Open everyday but Christmas, the zoo hours are from 10AM-5PM. Ticket prices are $10 for Adults (13 and up), $7 for Senior (62 and up), and $5 for Kids (2-12 years old). Kids under 2 get in free.
