MARGIE AND RITA: BLACK MAGIC COCKTAILS.

by

iced-tea.jpgBack in the summer of ‘05 I was exhibiting symptoms of what people might call, ‘a problem.’ I never went a day without an alcoholic beverage, I had a permanent dry spot under my nose because I was never properly hydrated, I chalked it up to a ‘wow, oopsy’ when my friend got arrested for an ‘almost DUI’* on our way to Jumbo’s Clown Room after an evening of boozing. The worst offense was probably when I was driving on the 5-freeway to rehearsal when my back tire blew and I prayed that a cop wouldn’t come to assist me and discover that my plastic Coffee Bean cup was full of PBR.

Now, here is where I say thank goodness for several things:

1. That no one was hurt due to my immaturity.

2. That I’m no longer a wreckless drinker, mainly because I’m no longer going through a terrible break up.

3. That I discovered the places that serve L.A.’s best margaritas.

And without further ado, I present:

‘RITAS!

A list.

1. Don Cuco’s in Burbank. (3911 W. Riverside Dr., Burbank, 91505, (818)842-1123) This place is hands down my favorite place for margaritas. It’s not swanky enough to warrant a ridiculous wait, the food is good (particularly the quesadillas), and the waitstaff is always friendly. And parking is always a cinch in Bur-town.

2. Marix in Boy’s Town. (1108 N. Flores St., West Hollywood, 323-656-8800) Love the food, love the atmosphere and the margaritas come in pitchers. The last time I was there I ate the paper right off my burrito. Now that’s a good margarita.

3) Lula’s in Santa Monica. (2720 Main St., Santa Monica, 90405, (310)392-5711 Five star food (try the sweet blue corn app, amazing!) five star margaritas.

conquistador1.jpg4) El Conquistador in Silverlake. (3701 W. Sunset Blvd, Silverlake, 90026, (323)666-5136) Their food is dicey, but their ‘ritas are top notch. I introduced myself to a soap star as ‘his biggest fan’ one night when I saw him at another table. I think he used to be on General Hospital. I ran into him at an audition a few weeks later. That was horrible.

5) El Compadre in Hollywood. (7408 W. Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, 90046, (323)874-7924) The margaritas do not disappoint at El Compadre. This place tends to get super crowded though, which is why it’s not tops on my list.

Other places of note:

El Carmen (8138 W. 3rd. St., LA, 90038)

Baja Cantina (311 Washington Blvd., Marina Del Rey, 90292)

*An ‘almost DUI’ is when your breathalizer test proves you’re not legally drunk but the cop who pulled you over thinks you’re a hot blond so he throws you in jail all night so he can chat you up.
