Union Rescue Mission robbed

This is exactly the sort of news I hate hearing about at any time of the year. Sandwiched between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when everyone is already in high holiday mode, makes this story even worse.
Sunday morning, someone broke into the second floor of the Union Rescue Mission and pried off two steel doors on a concrete-reinforced safe, stealing around $100,000. This is already a heinous story because this Mission helps some of the roughest out there on the streets, but the money stashed in this safe belonged to the people the mission was helping, not the mission itself. The people that stay at the Mission are encouraged to save around 70% of their earnings in the Mission’s safe, to help them reach their goal of moving out and getting their own home and becoming self sufficient again. Though they have been assured that they will in fact get their money back, most of the residents are shaken and depressed by this news. Some were about ready to leave and start their new lives, but will have to wait until their money is returned.
There is a little silver on this cloud, though. Police have arrested someone who is of high interest to them, a former Union Mission resident who had bragged many times that he was able to crack safes. He had been thrown out of the Mission a few weeks ago on bad terms, which leads the police to think this was a revenge crime. They are also asking for our help in locating a Jeep Cherokee that the suspect, Alvin Synder, had supposedly bought with the stolen cash and jewelry.
The average resident lost $4,000 to this burglar, money they had honestly earned and was saving to use for a good home for themselves, or to see their family again. Don’t let this criminal get away.
